CREATIVE WRITING COURSES ON PAXOS

‘AN INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING’ (no dates currently available)

"Having studied writing with Linda over the last eight years, I can confidently say she is stimulating, thought-provoking, entertaining, challenging, inclusive, inspiring, warm, encouraging, imaginative and fun. I have now written over 10 plays, have been short-listed in a competition run by the BBC and am in talks with a producer about a comedy series." - P D, Mayfield

"I can recommend Linda to anyone, whether they wish to write for pleasure or a possible career.  She has an inspired critical ear with constructive, spot-on editing advice, which she combines with an infectious enthusiasm. She also has lots of inside knowledge on how to break into the publishing and broadcasting world." - K W, Wadhurst

Whether you are an experienced writer who now wishes to move on to create or adapt existing plays and novels for the screen, or a complete beginner, 'An Introduction to Screenwriting', led by novelist and playwright, Linda M James, will take you through the writing process in easy stages: from creating characters and a story-line that will immediately grab your audience’s attention, right up to finding a buyer for your finished script.

The course will be based around group tuition sessions on five mornings a week and there will also be an opportunity for some one-to-ones. Afternoons will be free, leaving plenty of time to carry on writing, explore Paxos or simply relax.

During the course you will learn how to

·         create fascinating characters with interesting flaws and back-stories

·         create desire and conflict

·         write a story outline and identify your sub-plot

·         identify the most effective structure for your story and create sensational scenes

·         write the first 10 pages of your play so that it hooks an audience from the outset

·         write effective dialogue through getting into your characters’ heads, so that you not only know how they speak, but also how they will react in any situation

·         create anticipation and suspense using a variety of techniques

·         copyright, market and sell your script

Throughout the course you will study existing films and will also spend some time reading and acting out other students’ scripts.
